The Home Grown garden project at the Mayville Community Centre near Newington Green must relocate. The Centre has already closed to be completely rebuilt. The garden’s understanding was that the contractors could work around them. They’ve now been told they have to completely vacate the site by 17th May or lose everything.
Three raised beds for disabled gardeners need to be dismantled and then the boards and approx 9 tonnes of soil have to be moved 300m to a new site. Most of the fruit and vegetable plants have already been transplanted into smaller containers and there will be about 40 of these to move too. The raised beds then need to be rebuilt, filled and replanted.
It is a very big job for a small project. They’ve ordered 3 wheelbarrows and 6 heavy duty trolleys but they don’t have many able-bodied participants.
The move can only happen on two Saturdays – 8th and 15th May. All help would be most gratefully received, even if it is only for an hour or two. Electric screwdrivers and more wheelbarrows are needed too.
If anyone can assist them – this coming Saturday or the one after – please let them know. Contact:

Good news; the Home Grown project on the Mayville won’t need any more help. An amazing amount of work was done on Saturday and the contractors seem to have have developed a social conscience because they have told Caroline they’ll move the rest of the garden for them tomorrow. Well done everyone who turned up. Don’t forget to tell your Brokers how much time you put in so you can be credited. That includes you, Tom.
I can’t imagine the project will be able to move back for at least a year but everything should be safe – if a little shaded – in the Bronte Sisters’ communal garden on Matthias Road until then.
